Not much of it really.....
Midlife Crisis started by accident after a meal at Mike's house, where Angie and family were the guests. Angie had always wanted to sing and Mike could play the guitar. They tried a couple of songs and after a week or so, Tim joined as bassist. SEE EDITOR'S NOTE AT BOTTOM OF PAGE.
Lynn, Mike's wife booked the band (trio) as a support group for a fund raising evening for her Nursery School. We decided on 4 songs as we weren't headline - plus the fact that we only had a few weeks to get up to speed. PA equipment was duly bought and then we needed a name. The original thought was "Blame Lynn", but in the end Midlife Crisis was agreed on. The headline band cancelled 3 days before the gig, so we found ourselves alone on the stage. Quite frightening, but all went well.
Just after this gig, we were joined by Malcolm who added a much needed rhythm guitar to the sound. We expanded the song list to 10 before our next gig at the All Saint's Church Hall in Whitstable, Kent, where we had joint billing with another local band "No Fear".
Problem: We had no drummer. Malcolm came to the rescue and we had a guest drummer in Alan from "The Interceptors". Day saved.
After that gig we decided we need percussion of some sort. Fortunately, Mike's nephew, Ross was just starting at Kent Uni. and he played a mean bongo! He also had a snare drum, but no bass. It's amazing what you can do with an old metal bin.
The next gig was at the Marine Hotel - see gallery - with a set of 18 songs and an audience the size of which we'd never played to before. Ross borrowed a bass drum and we rocked!
Ross was coming to the end of his Uni. placement at Canterbury so yet again we needed a drummer. Angie's friend Simon fitted the bill. The right age, own kit, own transport and boy, can he play.
The next gig was at St John's Church Hall and then several in Whitstable and then onto Canterbury and West Malling - getting the feel of this now.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Angie doesn't think we started out as stated above, but you'll have to ask her how it (really) happened! |
